Some businesses are built on a business plan. Others are built on something deeper. For the owner of Grandma's Little Peddler in Stambaugh, the name above the door tells a story she carries with her every single day.

Her grandmother, Helyne, had a nickname for her long before any store existed: her little peddler. So when it came time to name the shop, there was never really a question. "That's who I am," she says simply. "Her little peddler." Grandma Helyne knew the vision, loved the name, and was, in her granddaughter's words, "tickled pink" about it. She passed away before the doors officially opened, but her presence is woven into every corner of the place.

The store itself is a treasure hunter's dream and a practical shopper's playground all at once. While the word "thrift" might come to mind, the owner is quick to point out that Grandma's Little Peddler is anything but your typical thrift store. The majority of inventory is actually new merchandise, spanning an impressively wide range: small appliances, furniture, toys, clothing, shoes, household goods, makeup, pet products, automotive supplies, crafting materials, and the kind of knick knacks that have a way of finding you before you find them. There genuinely is something for everyone.

The building adds its own layer of history to the experience. Grandma's Little Peddler operates out of the former Stambaugh General Hospital, later the Dickinson-Iron Health Department, and customers regularly walk in with stories. Many were born in that very building. It has become one of the unexpected joys of the job, listening to people connect with a space that holds real meaning for them.

And connection, it turns out, is the owner's favorite part of all of it. Seeing familiar faces, meeting new ones, and being a gathering point for the community is what drives her. Thrifting and reselling have always come naturally to her, but the relationships she has built through this store are something else entirely.

Grandma's Little Peddler is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.
